San Francisco 49ers Boost Wide Receiver Lineup with Mike Evans

The San Francisco 49ers have taken significant steps to bolster their wide receiver corps after losing key players during the 2025 offseason. Deebo Samuel’s departure and the team’s decision not to play Brandon Aiyuk again led to several strategic moves. They aimed to enhance quarterback Brock Purdy’s offensive options.

Among the key additions is De’Zhaun Stribling, selected in the second round of April’s draft. Christian Kirk joined the team through free agency. However, the standout acquisition is Mike Evans, a two-time All-Pro, who spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being drafted in 2014.

During an interview with Laura Britt from NBC Sports, Purdy expressed excitement about Evans joining the team. He acknowledged that Evans, a six-time Pro Bowl player, brings high expectations due to his Super Bowl win with Tom Brady. Purdy feels the pressure from his new teammate but sees it as a positive challenge.

“Being around him and understanding what it takes to play with him… the good pressure it brings. I have a guy demanding success and greatness, and I love that. It’s going to be good to bring Mike into the fold and build chemistry.”

Evans signed a three-year contract with the 49ers valued at up to $42.4 million during free agency. The veteran receiver, now 32, appeared in eight games the previous season. His performance was impacted by injury setbacks, including a hamstring issue, concussion, and broken clavicle. He managed 30 receptions for 368 yards and three touchdowns despite these challenges.

As the 49ers gear up for the upcoming season, Evans’s presence on the roster is expected to be pivotal. The team seeks improvement after their playoff performance. They overcame the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild-Card Round but suffered a heavy defeat, 41-6, to the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round. The need for a strong receiver was evident, with Jauan Jennings leading with only two catches for 23 yards against the Seahawks.
