1 hour ago 0

Botticelli Foods is recalling the bettergoods brand Pistachio Nut Butter after routine tests revealed salmonella in three jars. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that Walmart exclusively distributes the affected product.

This year, numerous public health alerts and recalls have been issued due to potential food contamination, damage, and undeclared allergens. Recently, over 360,000 pounds of turkey bacon were recalled due to potential Listeria contamination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or allergies annually. The FDA identifies nine “major” food allergens in the United States: eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts, and peanuts.

“Safety is a top priority. When notified of recalls, we move swiftly to remove the impacted products from our stores,” Walmart informed Newsweek.

What Is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a bacteria group causing salmonellosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), infection usually occurs by consuming contaminated food, water, or contact with infected animals. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. The CDC estimates 1.35 million infections yearly in the U.S.

The FDA states the product was recalled after routine tests in Florida discovered salmonella in three jars. Although infection is possible for anyone, young children, adults 65 and older, travelers, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.
