Role Model’s Musical Evolution with ‘Chuck Timely & The Hourglass’

1 hour ago 0

Tucker Pillsbury, known as Role Model, has released a third album following his viral hit “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out.” Pillsbury embraced the popularity of “Sally,” but he knew that it was time to evolve. As he put it, he wanted to create music beyond a viral hit with his new album, “Chuck Timely & The Hourglass,” which debuted on August 7 through Interscope.

Embracing Change

In his career leading up to this album, Role Model frequently asked, “Where’s my Sally tonight?” During tours, he often invited special guests to perform the song’s bridge. These guests initially were lucky fans, then later included celebrities like Charli XCX, Natalie Portman, and Bowen Yang. The catchy single became a sensation both for its popularity and for its groove which drew from country influences.

Pillsbury observed, “I learned about what a bridge can be,” as he reviewed the success of “Sally.” He aimed to take lessons from that song’s production and make enhanced versions of pop radio tracks. In creating “Chuck Timely & The Hourglass,” Pillsbury adhered to one strict rule: avoid synths and programmed drums. Instead, he drew inspiration from Madonna and yacht rock. The questions he asked himself were about recreating that ’80s synth pop feeling without using the obvious sounds.

The Album

The result is a dynamic album with guitar-driven melodies. “High Hopes 3000,” the lead single, carries influences from Georgia Satellites with a balance of rowdy and introspective tones. The album explores themes of time passing and nostalgia, embodied by the title character Chuck Timely who emerged halfway through the creative process. Pillsbury described how many songs are about time, both in general terms and personal experiences as life around him changed.

He created a vision for Timely, inspired by figures like Paul Newman, mixed with elements of loneliness and charm. The music captures an adult contemporary vibe, echoing artists like Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen, with the goal of merging Americana with modern sound.

Background and Evolution

Pillsbury hails from Maine and once attended film school in Pittsburgh. He became engaged in the music scene there and started uploading tracks to Soundcloud. His early work drew attention, including from the manager of rapper Mac Miller, which helped him secure a deal with Interscope in 2018.

As Role Model, his music initially took on a spiky alt-pop sound. His second album, “Kansas Anymore,” reflected a shift towards rock and folk, influenced by personal experiences. These changes helped refine his musical style.

“Sally” was added as a bonus to the deluxe edition of “Kansas Anymore,” propelling Role Model’s fame. Comparisons made by critics liken him to prominent pop figures, and his support for artists like Gracie Abrams on tour further boosted his visibility.

Moving Forward

As he embarked on “Chuck Timely & The Hourglass,” Pillsbury also pursued acting, starring in a rom-com directed by Lena Dunham. This experience, along with his musical success, solidified his understanding of his artistic identity.

The new album takes the successful elements of “Sally” and enhances them. The sound is more complex, ranging from emotional ballads to energetic melodies. Roles in his recent songs align him with male pop stars, offering a unique blend of alternative and folk influences.

His rumored relationship with actress Dakota Johnson made a playful appearance in “Love I You,” providing a note of celebrity intrigue. As he continues navigating his musical journey, Role Model avoids full commitment to musical trends, infusing originality into his sound.

Producers and musicians such as Mason Stoops and Taylor Mackall played roles in shaping the album’s direction. Creative choices, like incorporating unconventional instruments, kept the music spontaneous and fresh. To promote the album, Role Model will perform a homecoming concert in Portland, Maine, and embark on a major tour.

Pillsbury emphasizes his growth beyond viral success, seeking to deliver memorable live performances alongside creative artistry in “Chuck Timely & The Hourglass.”
