Rick Jackson Wins Georgia GOP Gubernatorial Runoff

ATLANTA, Ga. — In Georgia’s Republican gubernatorial runoff, billionaire businessman Rick Jackson defeated Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, despite Jones having the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. Jackson will now face former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in the general election this autumn.

Jackson invested over $100 million of his own money to campaign for the nomination. In his victory speech, he said, “When I announced my campaign, I said the political class protects itself….it’s a cartel and I said I’m coming to break it up. Well, tonight, we shattered it.” He emphasized his independence from the political establishment, stating he can’t be bought and is fully aligned with the eagerness of Georgia’s voters for change.

Initially unknown to many voters, Jackson captured attention through a strong advertising campaign that highlighted his background and personal story, having grown up in foster care without the means to attend college. This narrative resonated with voters across Georgia.

Support from Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who campaigned alongside Jackson, played a crucial role in the final stretch of the campaign. Cruz described Jackson’s life story as extraordinary and positioned him as a strong contender, warning against losing the battleground state of Georgia.

Jones criticized Jackson’s out-of-state support, preferring Trump’s endorsement. He claimed Jackson’s political past didn’t align with the conservative base, but Jackson countered these critiques as baseless.

Though Trump’s endorsement wielded significant influence in previous Republican primaries, it wasn’t enough for Jones. Previously, Trump-backed candidates successfully ousted incumbents in other states, but not in this case.

The upcoming general election against Keisha Lance Bottoms is critical. Bottoms criticized Jackson for his business practices and lack of support for Medicaid expansion, emphasizing the need for a governor dedicated to improving health care access in Georgia.
