Retired Navy Officer’s Impactful Anthem Performance

Retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer Generald Wilson recently gained national attention for his powerful performance of the national anthem before the LSU-Ole Miss football game in Oxford, Mississippi. Known for his anthem performances, Wilson describes his preparation process and the immense crowd response, emphasizing his dedication to honoring his country through song.

Wilson’s performance during the Ole Miss-LSU matchup left many fans calling it the ‘best ever.’ He described the opportunity as a “blessing,” but noted that his goal was always about more than just setting the stage for a sports rivalry. “My point is always to create unity in the national anthem,” Wilson told “Fox & Friends First.”

“We have our differences, we have our different opinions. That’s just the way it is, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t continue to love each other,” Wilson stated during an interview.

This message of unity has been a constant throughout Wilson’s “National Anthem Tour,” which began in 1998. He has since performed at numerous major sporting events across the country. Over time, Wilson has become a recognizable figure to fans. Often, the audience responds enthusiastically even before he starts singing. “The appreciation for patriotism and for me singing warms my heart,” he said. “Before they even say my name, the crowd is going bananas, just to see me on the jumbotron.”

Wilson is also a familiar presence for Ole Miss fans, performing nearly every year since around 2012 in special games. This year’s performance was for the Rebels’ intense matchup against LSU, now led by former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin. “That crowd is awesome,” Wilson commented.

Reflecting on his journey to national recognition, Wilson shared a memory of his grandfather, affectionately known as “Papa.” At the age of five, his grandfather predicted that Wilson would become “somebody” someday. Despite low expectations for those from his hometown of Kinloch, Missouri, Wilson takes pride in those who have pursued their calling. “I’m just glad to be in that number,” he expressed.
