Research Links Dementia Risk to Modifiable Lifestyle Factors

Nearly half of all dementia cases may relate to modifiable risk factors, as highlighted in new research. This study explains how lifestyle habits and chronic health conditions contribute to brain deterioration over time. The research, conducted by Lund University in Sweden, identifies common health risks—such as smoking, high blood pressure, heart disease, and elevated blood lipids—associated with the brain damage characteristic of vascular dementia.

Study Details

This study suggests that managing these risks could delay multiple forms of brain deterioration, even among individuals without cognitive decline symptoms. The study involved tracking nearly 500 participants, averaging 65 years old, over a four-year period. At the start, none exhibited cognitive impairments.

Researchers monitored changes in the brain’s white matter and levels of amyloid beta and tau, proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The modifiable risks examined were generally associated with blood vessel damage and accelerated white matter changes. Diabetes correlated with faster amyloid beta buildup, while lower body mass index showed a connection with increased tau accumulation.

The authors caution that these findings require further validation. However, they emphasize that addressing lifestyle risks might mitigate multiple types of brain damage concurrently. Sebastian Palmqvist, a senior lecturer in neurology at Lund University, remarked on the lack of prior research into the distinct underlying pathologies of dementia. He noted that focusing on vascular and metabolic risks could reduce the effects of simultaneous brain changes.

Fixed factors like age, gender, and genetics remain primary contributors to dementia risk. However, the study adds to evidence showing that lifestyle choices have a measurable impact on brain health. These choices include physical activity, smoking cessation, and cardiovascular health monitoring.

Joanna LaFleur, a dementia care expert, highlighted the practical implications. She mentioned that, while we cannot change age or genetics, we can influence factors affecting brain health. This perspective empowers individuals, reminding them they are not entirely powerless.

LaFleur appreciates how the research aligns with longstanding beliefs in dementia education. The heart and brain work together; thus, high blood pressure, smoking, and cardiovascular disease affect not only the heart but also brain blood vessels.

Researchers concluded that prioritizing vascular and metabolic health offers a tangible prevention strategy. This focus could delay multiple forms of brain deterioration before they develop into dementia.
