Republicans Distance Themselves from Trump’s Data Center Push Amid Growing Opposition

1 month ago 0

Polls show that many Americans oppose new data centers for AI in their communities, leading Republicans to distance themselves from President Donald Trump’s support for such projects. Despite Trump’s argument on social media promoting data centers for economic growth, many GOP candidates in the current elections express concerns.

Public Opinion on Data Centers

A Fox News poll reveals that 70% of voters oppose building new data centers for AI, with only 30% in favor. Among Republicans, 40% support the construction, while 46% of MAGA Republicans are in favor. Political strategists warn that data centers have become a contentious issue, stirring divisions within the party.

Challenges in Key Races

Concerns about rising electricity costs and resource consumption drive the opposition. Former Rep. Mike Rogers, GOP Senate nominee in Michigan, supports a one-year moratorium on data center construction to ensure stronger protections against utility price hikes and environmental impacts.

In Ohio’s Senate race, the National Republican Senatorial Committee highlights that data centers could benefit Democrats. Ads question GOP Sen. Jon Husted’s stance, labeling him “the face of data centers in Ohio.” In response, Husted proposes a bill to prevent average citizens from bearing data center energy costs.

Broader Political Reactions

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton unveiled a plan to address concerns over data center growth. Governor Greg Abbott paused new data center connections to assess regulatory impacts. Ohio gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy promises an executive order to halt new projects until safeguards are implemented.

Rep. Tom Tiffany, Wisconsin’s GOP gubernatorial nominee, advocates conditional support. In Pennsylvania, Stacy Garrity calls for a temporary pause on new developments. Other Republicans, like Rep. Byron Donalds, push for AI centers to independently manage their utilities instead of public resources.

Trump’s Position

Despite opposition, Trump remains firm. He criticized Abbott’s decision, calling it a “mistake,” and suggested the movement benefits China. However, Trump appears open to Republicans opposing data centers. GOP strategist Matt Gorman commended Trump’s long-term perspective, noting the need for advocating the benefits more clearly.

Industry Response

The AI industry is responding with public engagement campaigns to promote policies ensuring consumer protection, environmental safeguarding, and community choice. Build American AI emphasizes fair economic practices while supporting infrastructure development to maintain America’s leadership in AI innovation.
