Rep. Don Bacon Criticizes Trump Administration’s Deportation Efforts

Representative Don Bacon, a Nebraska Republican, has expressed criticism towards the Trump administration’s deportation practices. He stated that officials have targeted individuals who make little sense to deport and that some deportations lack common sense and humanity.

Bacon’s comments were made in relation to the case of Mariana, an Omaha woman scheduled for deportation on September 18, despite having no criminal record and strong community ties. He accused the administration of overreaching in deportations, citing Mariana’s situation as an example. Bacon emphasized his belief that Congress bears the responsibility, urging legislative improvements. He noted many congressional members are reluctant to address the issue.

While Bacon is known for supporting secure borders and removal of threats to public safety, his comments highlight a divergence from typical Republican views. He shared his thoughts on social media and through an opinion piece in the Omaha World-Herald. He argued that deporting dangerous criminals has merit, yet criticized actions he described as inhumane and unchristian.

“America must be better than this,” Bacon wrote.

The White House defended its position, stating that it enforces laws passed by Congress and encourages illegal aliens to use resources for voluntary departure.

Amidst expanding immigration enforcement, with ICE setting records for arrests, President Trump has pledged large-scale deportations. Newsweek has reported various arrests, including cases involving green card holders. Bacon advocates for immigration reform, citing Mariana’s achievements and her compliance with immigration requirements.

Bacon argues her deportation does not enhance public safety, pointing out shortcomings in the legal process after Mariana missed an immigration hearing as a minor due to abandonment.

Bacon extended his criticism, highlighting other cases he believes lack common sense and humanity, particularly those involving Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. He argues for a pathway to permanent residence for TPS individuals who meet certain conditions.

Recent ICE statistics show increased enforcement activity, with rising detentions mainly involving individuals without criminal histories. Judges have ordered releases, underscoring the growing detained population.

Bacon’s remarks underscore a divide over immigration enforcement, calling for reforms beyond strict border security. He supports the Dignity Act, proposing enhanced border security and legal status opportunities for some immigrants. Bacon believes decades of failed modernization efforts have left administrations relying on temporary measures.

Not seeking reelection, Bacon continues his push for immigration reform as Mariana’s deportation date approaches.
