A recreational boating incident in the San Francisco Bay resulted in the death of one individual and three others reported missing. On Tuesday, a wave struck the Volare, a three-deck, 49-foot cabin cruiser, causing it to roll onto its side and eventually sink. Officials shared this information on Wednesday.
The boat carried 20 people, of whom 16 were rescued. Sadly, one passenger, Clifford Joseph Boisa, aged 79 from Sutter County, Calif., died from injuries after being brought ashore.
The group onboard comprised close friends and family gathered to scatter a loved one’s ashes in the bay.
Captain Jarod Toczko of the U.S. Coast Guard revealed during a news conference that the vessel lost stability after being hit by a wave, causing several individuals to fall overboard as it tilted. The remaining passengers likely became disoriented as the vessel listed.
As the boat took on water, both lower levels were submerged by the time rescuers arrived at approximately 3:30 p.m.
