Recount Shifts Indiana Senate Primary in Favor of Trump-Backed Candidate

A recount in the contested Indiana state Senate primary for May has shifted the results in favor of Republican Paula Copenhaver, backed by former President Donald Trump. Initially, incumbent Spencer Deery led the race by three votes. Copenhaver’s challenge led to the Indiana Recount Commission discarding ten votes over minor errors. This decision gave Copenhaver a three-vote advantage, according to the Indiana Capital Chronicle.

Spencer Deery was among seven Republican state senators who faced primary challenges after opposing a Trump-supported redistricting plan the previous year. Ultimately, five senators lost their races, but Deery managed to narrowly lead until the recount.

Deery expressed plans to appeal the recount decision in a post on X. He criticized the ruling as an effort to alter voter intentions based on political motivations. He also conveyed to NBC News his belief that the commission set a problematic precedent by focusing on technicalities rather than voter intent.

As of now, Copenhaver has not commented on the recount results. If she maintains her lead through appeal, she is likely to win in the Republican-leaning 23rd state Senate district. The district race includes Democratic candidate David Sanders and independent Joshua Brant.

Senate President Rod Bray, also opposed to Trump’s redistricting, previously announced he wouldn’t seek re-election as the Republican leader. The new state Senate may revisit the redistricting issue before the 2028 election.

On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump thanked Indiana voters for their support in both his election and in the recent primary developments, criticizing what he referred to as ‘wayward Senators’ and Rodric Bray.
