Records Shattered at Lumberjack World Championships

The Lumberjack World Championships in Hayward, Wisconsin, concluded with remarkable achievements as competitors from 16 states and nine countries participated in the annual event. Held over three days, the competition saw 66 men and 40 women contend for titles amid intense sawing, chopping, log-rolling, and speed climbing.

Women’s World Records Established

Karolina Urbanová from the Czech Republic created history by setting two world records. She excelled in the Women’s Underhand Chop, slicing through 11 inches of white pine in a swift 21.28 seconds. Urbanová also dominated the Women’s Standing Chop, cutting through a 9-inch white pine in just 19.38 seconds.

Meredith Ingbretson of Hayward set a new high in the Women’s Boom Run, navigating across eight red cedar logs over water in an impressive 13.78 seconds.

Evolution of Women’s Participation

Though women have been part of the Championships since 1960, their involvement has expanded from purely log-rolling to over 20 timber sports events. Nancy Zalewski, a seasoned competitor of 27 years, reflected on the growth. “When I started, I was chopping alongside men,” she said, noting the evolution and her role in training new talent like Kate Witkowski.

History and Tradition

The Lumberjack Bowl, where the event takes place, holds historical significance as it was once a log-driving pond. The tradition dates back to the 1890s, showcasing a rich heritage.

Community Spirit and Culture

The event is a festive occasion with children dressed in lumberjack attire and brands distributing inflatable axes and toy chainsaws. Besides the competitive events, attendees enjoy wood-carving demonstrations, log-rolling lessons for kids, live music, food trucks, and axe-themed activities.

The camaraderie within the sport is notable, said Witkowski. Participants support each other in this niche sport, striving to improve despite the challenges of acquiring specialized gear.
