A man accused of reckless driving took police on a wild chase through San Diego, ending on a busy beach Sunday morning. Beachgoers watched in shock as officers apprehended him on the sand.
The chase began shortly before 7:30 a.m. when witnesses reported a reckless driver in the Pacific Beach area. San Diego Police received multiple calls about a man in a tan or gold Nissan Frontier performing donuts in parking lots and nearly hitting other vehicles. He also appeared to strike curbs and a retaining wall.
Officers quickly responded and located the truck heading west toward the ocean. An attempt to stop the driver failed when he fled, initiating a pursuit.
Officers eventually halted the pursuit due to what police described as the driver’s reckless disregard for public safety.
Later, police found the truck again, but the driver did not stop, leading to another chase that was also called off. By this time, the police sought the vehicle for felony evasion, saturating the area in search of it.
The truck was later spotted driving slowly, and officers awaited the department’s Airborne Law Enforcement helicopter to assist. The helicopter followed the Nissan as it drove onto the beach toward the water.
Beachgoers recorded video as officers converged on the pickup in the sand. The driver, 25-year-old Griffin Charles Foy, was seen with his hands raised during his arrest. A police K-9 was present but was not used during the arrest.
Police conducted a high-risk vehicle stop due to the serious nature of the offenses and Foy’s disregard for safety. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Foy faced charges of felony evasion, obstructing an officer, and driving under the influence of drugs. Despite the dangerous pursuit, no injuries were reported.
