Rahm Emanuel, former Chicago Mayor and White House chief of staff, has cautioned Democrats against pursuing impeachment of President Donald Trump. Instead, he recommends focusing on ethics reform if they secure control of the House of Representatives. His comments were made during an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.” Emanuel emphasized that impeachment proceedings would be futile and detrimental, leading to unproductive political conflict.
He said, “Short answer: No, because it’s not going anywhere, and it’s going to be a food fight, and it’s just going to be we return to the politics of fighting.” He underscored the importance of delivering substantial change through a comprehensive ethics package.
Emanuel stated, “You’re never going to get an impeachment. Then if you do that, you just basically prove all Washington is what the American people think. It’s Disneyland on the Potomac. Deliver the change. Deliver a comprehensive ethics package that uses the investigations to then deliver change.”
Emanuel’s remarks arrive as Democrats maintain a sizable lead over Republicans in the run-up to the midterm elections. Predictions indicate that Democrats could win 215 seats, compared to 201 seats for Republicans, needing only three more wins from the 19 toss-up races to secure a majority.
On the other hand, Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Leader, has refrained from committing to impeachment proceedings. He emphasizes prioritizing solutions to reduce living costs for Americans.
Emanuel, who has served as both Chicago’s Mayor and former President Obama’s chief of staff, is one of several Democrats rumored to be considering a 2028 presidential campaign. His political stance is that of a moderate, resisting socialist influence but supporting several far-left candidates.
During his speech at the Texas Tribune Festival, Emanuel championed James Talarico, Democratic Texas Senate nominee, praising his strength and openness in discussing faith.
Although initially hesitant, Emanuel expressed support for Abdul El-Sayed’s candidature in Michigan’s Senate race. “I mean, it doesn’t matter what I do… it matters what the Michigan voters think,” Emanuel told Fox News Digital, reiterating that the outcome depends on voter choice in Michigan.
