However, in the current term, several prominent voices have faced consequences previously thought unimaginable. I have exchanged texts with journalist Don Lemon after he experienced incarceration. I have seen the untimely conclusion of ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,’ a program featuring some of the funniest talents. Additionally, ’60 Minutes,’ a cornerstone of television journalism, has nearly collapsed amidst accusations of politically motivated meddling.

This reflects what a less-free America might seem like. Despite Mr. Trump’s recent setbacks, such as his green Reflecting Pool mishap and loss in a self-initiated war, he retains a strong influence over the nation. Evidence of his hold is visible in the silence of celebrities who previously vocally opposed him.

Last year, Selena Gomez, the grandchild of undocumented immigrants, shared an emotional Instagram story criticizing the administration’s immigration policy. She faced heavy backlash online, notably from figures like Piers Morgan and anonymous right-wing accounts, leading her to delete the post. Political discourse aimed at the administration is noticeably absent from major Hollywood events, and ‘Saturday Night Live’ seems to have softened its stance on Mr. Trump.

Jennifer Lawrence shared her stance on political engagement with The Times, stating, ‘Celebrities do not influence voter choices. Sharing opinions merely fuels division.’ Many colleagues have embraced this perspective.
