President Donald Trump recently traveled on a smaller military plane due to concerns over an Iranian assassination plot. This incident occurred after the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, and drew attention to the safety measures surrounding presidential transport. The Washington Post reported that Trump appeared to board Air Force One in Turkey, but was discreetly transferred to an Air Force C-32A using a catering truck. This made Air Force One a decoy while the president traveled in secret. Newsweek contacted the White House and Secret Service for comments but did not immediately receive a response.

Trump had announced before his trip that he would be using the ‘former Air Force One’ from the NATO summit to a UK airbase. He chose this instead of the controversial Boeing 747-8 jet donated by Qatar, which has since been modified by the U.S. military. Concerns had arisen about the security measures on the Qatari jet, which Trump revealed at Joint Base Andrews, claiming it offered a “level of luxury that nobody’s ever seen before.”

What Is The Air Force’s C-32A?

The C-32A is a jet often used by the vice president, the first lady, and senior politicians worldwide. When they fly, it uses the call sign Air Force Two. The passenger cabin is divided into four sections. The first section features a communications center, ten seats, refreshment facilities, and a toilet. The second is a fully-enclosed stateroom with a changing area, entertainment system, fold-out bed, toilet, and two first-class seats. Eight additional seats are in a third section, with thirty-two more seats, a galley, and two toilets at the back.

How Does Air Force One Compare?

The current Air Force One fleet consists of two Boeing 747-200B aircraft, known as VC-25. These planes have been specially configured for presidential use, with changes to the interior and advanced avionics. The C-32 is smaller but equipped with similar priorities in security. It is an upgraded Boeing 757-200, used by top U.S. officials. The design allows for better visibility to detect threats to the aircraft and passengers.

Many security features of these aircraft remain undisclosed. The C-32 includes systems that alert the crew to potential threats from both air and ground, along with advanced navigation systems to avoid mid-air collisions. The Qatari-donated $400 million jet was criticized for lacking defense technology, such as countermeasures against heat-seeking missiles.

The C-32 and VC-25 have been in service for decades. Plans for replacements are underway, with new Boeing jets expected by 2028.
