On Wednesday, President Donald J. Trump visited New London, Connecticut, to deliver the commencement address at the United States Coast Guard Academy—a task he performed for the second time as commander in chief.
President Trump expressed enthusiasm about becoming the first president to give a second keynote address to the institution. “I’m thrilled to become the first president to ever give a second keynote address to this storied institution,” he told the graduates.
However, Trump’s statement was inaccurate as previous presidents—including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama—have delivered multiple addresses at the academy.
During his speech, Trump praised the efforts of the Coast Guard, focusing on their involvement in the Iran war. Despite this, the cadets maintained a composed demeanor, responding with only scattered applause.
The event marked a contrast from Trump’s last appearance at the academy in 2017. Back then, he faced a different set of challenges during his presidency. Nevertheless, he kept a consistent tone regarding perseverance, urging the cadets to “fight, fight, fight” against whatever danger they may encounter, echoing a similar sentiment from his 2017 address.
The commencement ceremony gave President Trump an opportunity to engage with the future leaders of the Coast Guard, reinforcing the significance of their roles both at sea and in national security.
