President Donald Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. His appearance drew a mixed response from the crowd.
As the national anthem played, Trump was displayed on the big screen above the court. While some cheered as he saluted from his suite, boos were notably louder. The camera then shifted to NYPD officers presenting flags on the court.
Trump watched the game with his granddaughter, Kai Trump, and Knicks owner James Dolan. This reception contrasted with an earlier appearance at the College Football National Championship, where Trump was met with enthusiastic cheers at Hard Rock Stadium.
Trump’s visit to New York brought about heightened security measures. Madison Square Garden was transformed into a secure area by the Secret Service and local law enforcement. This led to road closures and canceled watch parties around the venue.
The NYPD, in coordination with the Secret Service, decided against holding watch parties due to the presidential visit. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained this decision, noting that such lockdowns are typical during presidential visits. MSG officials, however, attributed the cancelation to local city officials denying permits, not Trump’s presence.
Since his second term began, Trump has attended various major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, and Ryder Cup.
