On July 4, 2026, President Trump delivered a speech in Washington, D.C., honoring veterans and celebrating America’s 250th anniversary of independence. Severe weather necessitated a two-hour evacuation of the National Mall, delaying the event.
During his speech, President Trump praised veterans, including those from World War II and the Vietnam War, alongside William Harvey Carney, a former slave who became the first Black man awarded the Medal of Honor. The event, titled “Salute to America,” took place at the National Mall.
The president highlighted historical U.S. military victories, including a recent claim of sinking an entire Iranian navy fleet of 159 ships. He compared this to the historical sinking of a Spanish fleet at Manila Bay.
In his speech, Trump criticized communism, suggesting it posed a threat within the United States. He stated, “Our warriors did not fight communism across the world only to have it resurface in America. It’s like a cancer, you got to cut it out.” The rhetoric was viewed by some as targeting Democrats ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump also promoted the SAVE America Act. This act would require voters to provide proof of citizenship to register and show ID at polls. He remarked, “We want to keep America great, and we will do so by approving the Save America Act. You won’t have cheating on the elections anymore, it’s very simple.”
The president closed by honoring NASA astronauts, police forces, and farmers. He described the 250th anniversary as “only the dawn of the golden age of America” and assured that “the best is yet to come.”
