On Sunday, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participated in the opening events of the IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C. The couple took an honorary lap around the track in the presidential vehicle, known as the Beast, before the race commenced. Supporters in the audience cheered as the motorcade made its way around the track.

The president was set to wave the green flag to signal the start of the race. Prior to this, both President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump met with drivers and team members, offering them encouragement. Speaking to FOX Sports’ Jamie Little, President Trump expressed his wish for the event to be both safe and enjoyable, emphasizing the importance of a good time for all involved. He conveyed his best wishes to the drivers, advising them to enjoy themselves and have fun.

The weekend featured a variety of racing events, including both IndyCar and the International Race of Champions (IROC) series. These races were part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix was set to begin at 1 p.m. ET, taking place on a 1.7-mile track that would see drivers racing near the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall for a total of 147 laps.

Álex Palou secured pole position for the race. Leading the series standings with six wins in the 2026 season, Palou held a 133-point advantage over Kyle Kirkwood and a 137-point lead over David Malukas.

Ahead of the race, final preparations were made in Washington, D.C., for the inaugural Grand Prix event. The two-day NTT IndyCar Series race, scheduled for August 22-23, was to occur along a route that passed landmarks of the National Mall.

Álex Palou had previously attended the track unveiling event earlier in the year, experiencing the Oval Office and meeting the president. Recalling his White House visit, Palou described it as an amazing experience, highlighting the unique opportunity to be an IndyCar driver in the U.S. and the gratitude he felt towards the country.

Palou even described a humorous moment from his visit where he was sprayed with the president’s cologne. Sharing his experiences, Palou emphasized the significance of the occasion and looked forward to recounting it to future generations.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix weekend was established by President Trump as part of the celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary. Events such as this added to the festive atmosphere surrounding this historic occasion.
