Powerful Earthquake Strikes Off Japan’s Northern Coast

2 hours ago 0

A significant earthquake occurred off Japan’s northern coast on Thursday. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quake had a magnitude of 7.2, which was an upgrade from the initial reading of 6.9. It occurred off the eastern coast of Iwate with a depth of about 50 kilometers (30 miles).

The U.S. Geological Survey also recorded the quake with a magnitude of 6.9. This region has experienced frequent strong earthquakes in recent months, including one that led to a weeklong mega-quake caution advisory in December.

It shook Japan’s northeastern region during the morning rush hour and had mild effects in Tokyo. There have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage, according to Minoru Kihara, the chief government spokesperson.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the government’s emergency team is prioritizing people’s safety while assessing the situation and preparing relief operations if necessary. She advised residents in the affected areas to remain cautious of potential aftershocks.

Tomoko Nagane, a primary school principal in Hashikami, Aomori prefecture, mentioned that she was driving when the quake alert sounded. She felt moderate sideway shaking. The children at the school were unharmed, although some were distraught due to fear. As a precaution, classes were canceled, and students were sent home safely.

Footage aired on Japan’s NHK public television showed journalists in various towns, such as Sendai and Morioka, describing the shaking lasting for a few minutes, but without visible damage. Commuting routines appeared unchanged despite the quake.

The East Japan Railway Co., responsible for trains in the northeastern regions, suspended some bullet trains and other local lines for safety inspections. No abnormalities were reported from nuclear power plants and facilities like the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which was affected by the 2011 quake and tsunami, according to Kihara.

Japan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries globally.
