Potential Arson Investigated in Harvey Following Multistructure Fire

1 week ago 0

A fire that engulfed multiple abandoned homes on Turlington Road in Harvey is under investigation for possible arson, according to a statement from the Harvey Fire Department. The incident occurred on June 2, and evidence suggests the fires might have been intentionally set. Further forensic analysis is needed to confirm this.

The blaze began at 2:30 a.m. on the 15400 block of Turlington Road and was controlled by 4 a.m. No injuries were reported. Electricians found a kitten in the debris after the fires at the 5400 block of Turlington Road.

Fire officials are collaborating with state and local partners to investigate further. The fires initially started from two structures and spread to nearby abandoned buildings due to extreme heat and power line hazards. ComEd temporarily cut power to ensure safety.

“We take these incidents very seriously and are committed to identifying those responsible,” said Fire Chief Howard Fisher. “The safety of our residents, businesses, and firefighters remains our highest priority.”

In October, Harvey furloughed about 40% of city workers, including nearly half of the Fire Department, due to financial distress. The city has relied on fire mutual aid from nearby communities to address staffing shortages over the past seven months.

Officials are urging anyone with information about the fires to contact 708-331-7720.
