The poll precedes the 250th anniversary of the United States, underscoring Trump’s role as a divisive character in contemporary discourse.
Polarizing Views
Trump topped the list of worst Americans in history with 34% of respondents selecting him, comprising 64% of Democrats, 34% of independents, and 4% of Republicans. This significant partisan divide reflects the contentious opinions surrounding Trump’s impact.
Conversely, Trump also emerged as the greatest American in history for 8% of total respondents. Among Republicans, he received the highest individual support at 24%. These results illustrate the sharp political polarization in perceptions of Trump’s legacy.
Comparison with Historic Figures
The poll’s results highlight contrasting views on Trump’s place in history, with former President Abraham Lincoln being named the greatest American by 18% of respondents. Lincoln’s recognition was consistent across both major political parties.
Other notable figures included George Washington, chosen by 13%, Martin Luther King Jr. at 12%, and Barack Obama at 10%. The inclusion of these figures shows a range of values associated with recognized historical greatness.
Survey Methodology
The poll involved two separate online surveys conducted from June 23-25 and June 24-27, including 1,110 and 1,118 participants, respectively. To ensure representativeness, the sample was weighted according to key demographics of American adults. The margin of error is approximately +/-4 percentage points.
Participants first answered open-ended questions about historical figures and then expressed their opinions based on these responses. YouGov is planning a future survey to recognize prominent women in American history, aiming to broaden the discourse beyond the male-centric historical narratives.
