Newly unsealed police body camera footage shows the arrest of Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Mangione was detained by police officers after a five-day manhunt. He was wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel in 2024.
The footage played during a suppression hearing in December 2025. Defense attorneys argued that searching Mangione’s backpack was a violation of his rights. This is the first public release of the footage outside court settings.
Police responded to a 911 call in December 2024. They were alerted about a man resembling the suspect eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona. Officers questioned Mangione about a fake driver’s license with the name “Mark Rosario.” The video captures Mangione identifying himself and admitting he lied about his identity.
The footage shows officers transporting Mangione to the police station. Investigators conducted a strip search and found a firearm in his backpack. Prosecutors later linked it to the crime scene. A judge ruled that most evidence from the search would be admissible at trial.
“The police in the footage do not exhibit safety concerns,” legal expert Richard Shorenstein commented. This contrasts with the prosecution’s claim that the backpack search at McDonald’s was a necessary safety measure.
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death. He also faces charges of second-degree murder, weapons, and forgery. A first-degree murder charge was dismissed in the state trial last year.
Mangione’s sentencing on federal charges is scheduled for December. There is still a pending decision on the progression of the state case.
