Pilot’s Final Flight Features Emotional Tribute from Daughter

Southwest Airlines Captain Jim Curtis marked the end of a distinguished 43-year career with a memorable final flight alongside his daughter, First Officer Julia Curtis. Jim’s career spanned 21 years in the Air Force followed by 22 years at Southwest Airlines. This special flight garnered attention on social media after his daughter delivered an emotional tribute that was highlighted on the airline’s Instagram on June 21, in commemoration of Father’s Day.

Julia Curtis praised her father as her greatest mentor, emphasizing the valuable life lessons he imparted to her beyond flying. This loving acknowledgment touched both her father and the passengers onboard.

Both father and daughter appeared on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” recounting the powerful moment. Jim confessed that maintaining composure during his daughter’s heartfelt message was challenging. “I spent 30 years trying to have a stern profile,” he noted, sharing that his lip quivered during the tribute.

The moment coincided with Jim reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65 for pilots, making it a significant ceremonial last journey, referred to as a fini-flight in industry terms. Julia had long hoped to join her father on this meaningful flight, which she described as a special opportunity to express gratitude to her lifelong role model.

Reflecting on life after retirement, Jim has plans to turn his attention to family life, retiring to a farm to grow walnuts with his wife. He expressed excitement about his daughter’s promising future, proud of the path she chose.

Julia shared that her father’s wisdom played a central role in her success, especially his advice about maintaining a positive attitude and strong work ethic. “The two things you can control are your attitude and your effort,” she recalled him saying. “And he said, if you show up with a positive attitude and give a good effort with whatever you’re doing, good things should follow.”
