Phillies’ Zack Wheeler Expresses Frustration Over All-Star Snub

Zack Wheeler, a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, has demonstrated impressive performance on the mound despite beginning the season by recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome. Turning 36 this year, Wheeler has pitched with remarkable skill, resembling an All-Star caliber player, although he has not been officially named as one.

In 14 starts, Wheeler has achieved a 2.28 ERA, with only 22 earned runs over 87.0 innings, and a 0.908 WHIP, both of which would represent personal bests. Though Wheeler is five innings short of qualifying for the ERA title, he ranks sixth among pitchers with at least 80 innings.

Wheeler expressed dissatisfaction about missing the Midsummer Classic, which will be held at his home ballpark, due to his pitching schedule rather than his prior injury. He remarked, “It p—– me off. It’s kind of BS, so. Maybe if I wasn’t necessarily right in there, I wouldn’t be saying this, but I feel like I’ve earned it, and just because I pitch on a certain day, I can’t pitch in the All-Star Game or even be there or get the recognition for it.”

Wheeler’s recent performance saw him pitch seven innings, allowing one run while striking out 14 Cincinnati Reds, positioning him to start a game on normal rest the Sunday before the All-Star Game. He noted, “The second and third days (of rest) are when I usually throw my bullpen.” He felt capable of participating in the All-Star Game, noting that most pitchers usually pitch for one inning.

The selection process for pitchers involves MLB and the MLB Players Association, with input from players and coaches, who select five starters from each league. MLB then fills several other spots. This year’s selections included Jacob Misiorowski, Cristopher Sánchez, Chris Sale, Chase Burns, and Paul Skenes.

While All-Stars were announced earlier in the week, additional reserves may be added based on player availability.
