New York City faced a disturbing incident with an antisemitic stabbing on Thursday afternoon, prompting varied reactions from officials. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani initially remained silent about the event. Instead, he focused on promoting his millionaire housing tax initiative. This incident occurred amidst heightened concerns surrounding violence against the Jewish community, drawing attention from several state officials.
Mayor Mamdani eventually addressed the situation, stating, “I have been briefed on today’s horrifying stabbings on the Upper West Side, where an Asian man and a Jewish man were attacked. According to witness and victim statements, the perpetrator yelled ‘Allahu Akbar’ during both attacks. I am relieved that both victims are in stable condition.”
The New York Police Department swiftly responded, arresting Raul Morales in connection with both assaults. Although Mayor Mamdani commended the NYPD for their quick action, his delayed public response raised concerns among some observers. These individuals feared that his critical views on Israel, which align with some progressive stances, might contribute to hesitancy in supporting Jewish communities in the U.S.
“According to credible reports I received, the attacker was yelling ‘Allahu Akbar’ during his attempted murder. I pray for the speedy recovery of the victims. [Mamdani,] you got blood on your hands,” wrote Councilwoman Inna Vernikov.
A 57-year-old man was attacked near West 84th Street and Central Park West at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time. He suffered a stab wound to the back but was found conscious and alert and taken to a local hospital in stable condition. Shortly after, a 50-year-old man was discovered with a stab wound to his torso nearby. Like the first victim, he was conscious and alert and transported to a hospital.
Authorities labeled the violence an “antisemitic stabbing,” but the motive remains unidentified, and it is unclear if the attacks are being investigated as hate crimes. NYPD confirmed that the suspect, Raul Morales, is in custody.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul responded to the incident, expressing disgust at the attack and emphasizing the need for all New Yorkers to feel safe, regardless of faith or identity. Julie Menin, speaker of the New York City Council, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the fear within the Jewish community.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Mayor Mamdani posted about a different matter on social media shortly after the attack. He highlighted his housing tax plan aimed at reducing excessive property holdings amongst wealthy New Yorkers. “If you have a second home in New York City worth more than $5M, check your mailbox when you’re back in the five boroughs — because you’ve got mail,” Mamdani wrote.
In the first quarter of 2026, NYPD data indicates a rise in hate crime complaints and related arrests compared to the previous year. Mamdani’s office did not provide immediate comments on any delays in issuing a response to the stabbing case.
