Life in Indiana

Lizzie’s early life unfolded in a loving family. She and her brother, adopted due to their mother’s autoimmune issues, enjoyed a supportive upbringing. However, their world shifted in 2002 when their mother passed away. Lizzie, then 16, navigated the challenges with her father after her brother moved out.

Encounter with Religion

Although Lizzie grew up in a Christian environment, her active religious engagement intensified in her teens. In 2005, meeting her future husband deepened her involvement in evangelical culture. Together, they embraced regular church activities, Bible studies, and traditional beliefs about marriage and motherhood.

Struggles with Motherhood

Expecting a family after marrying in 2008, Lizzie faced unexpected trials. Her first miscarriage in 2010 left her with profound emotional and physical trauma. Despite counseling that it was God’s plan, internally she wrestled with depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Infertility and Pregnancy Challenges

Enduring six years of infertility treatments, Lizzie finally conceived in 2016. Yet, the pregnancy faced complications. At the 19-week scan, doctors revealed her daughter’s severe defects. Faced with difficult choices, influenced by religious beliefs and hope, Lizzie chose to continue the pregnancy.

“We were both operating under the same religious beliefs and the same hope that somehow a miracle would happen.”

Despite the grief and denial, Lizzie prepared for her baby’s short life by asking loved ones to write Christmas cards for her daughter. On January 24, 2017, Lizzie gave birth to Maggie, who passed away shortly after.

Reflection and Transformation

Lizzie’s journey continued with more miscarriages and a decision to stop pursuing motherhood in 2019. This pivotal moment prompted her to reassess her faith and priorities. She pursued higher education, moved to Iowa, and ultimately abandoned evangelical Christianity.

A New Path Forward

Now politically active and committed to women’s health care, Lizzie reflects on her decisions with maturity and clarity. Acknowledging the lifelong impact of her experiences, she advocates for compassionate reproductive choices.

Maggie’s presence remains powerful in Lizzie’s life. Her advocacy honors Maggie’s memory by supporting women’s rights and reproductive health care. Lizzie’s story serves as a comforting reminder that those facing loss deserve freedom and compassion in their choices.
