For Kevin Brandt, a basketball parent from Leipsic, OH, attendance costs at events, often surpassing those of NBA games, are not new. Understanding the financial implications of AAU basketball is part of the deal, especially since their daughter plays for a top Midwest travel team. However, the experience at the Spooky Nook complex in Hamilton was puzzling.
Brandt expressed his surprise on social media after attending the Select Showcase tournament, sharing, “Just got home from watching my daughter play in AAU Tournament, Select Showcase. $260 for my wife and I to watch her play this weekend. $260 to get in. Someone HAS to feel a little guilty about this, don’t they?” Typically, these tournaments offer a $70-$90 weekend pass, yet this option was unavailable in Hamilton.
The family was informed that they needed to pay separate admission for two tournaments hosted at the same venue. These tournaments, known as the Select Events Super Showcase and the Midwest Summer Classic, were organized by the same operators. The Brandts ended up paying $120 for each event, plus an additional $5 daily parking fee. Faced with hotel prices exceeding $300 per night, the family opted to commute 2.5 hours daily after staying one night. Brandt mentioned the extra cost of $60 when another family member and his girlfriend joined them for one day.
Attempts to clarify admission and parking fee responsibilities from Spooky Nook’s senior management went unanswered. The ongoing concerns among AAU parents center on the increasing costs. Parents like Mookie Edmond, who attended a South Carolina tournament, shared similar experiences. This event offered a $90 weekend pass, unlike the Ohio tournament.
Edmond, identifying with Brandt’s situation, emphasized the commitment to support her child’s basketball journey. “We’re going to invest in our child,” she stated in a Facebook video, addressing the expenses of high-level AAU participation. However, after spending nearly $1,500 on related costs, she questioned the feasibility of participating in another weekend marquee.
This situation underscores the challenges AAU basketball parents face, balancing their children’s sports aspirations against substantial financial commitments.
