If you talk to most WNBA fans about the top players in the league, Paige Bueckers often comes up alongside Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark and Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson. At 24, Bueckers plays as a guard for the Dallas Wings and is coming off an impressive rookie season. Her achievements include winning the WNBA and AP Rookie of the Year awards, earning a spot on the All-WNBA Second Team, and participating as an All-Star.
This year, Bueckers ranks among the league’s top 10 in scoring with 20.6 points per game and in assists with 5.9 per game. Her contributions have placed the Wings in the final playoff spot. Despite these accomplishments, Bueckers was ranked fifth in ESPN’s recent top 50 player ranking. She trailed behind A’ja Wilson, Caitlin Clark, New York Liberty’s Breanna Stewart, and Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles.
“Bueckers has come into her own as one of the best guards in the league this season,” Alexa Philippou wrote. “Her numbers have dipped a touch since the All-Star break, but she recently had standout performances with 32 points in three quarters against Seattle and a 22-point, 11-assist double-double against Portland.”
With Azzi Fudd, a fellow No. 1 pick, out for the season, more responsibility falls on Bueckers as Dallas aims to secure its first playoff appearance since 2023. This year, Bueckers averages more than a full point and half-assist more per game compared to last year. She leads the Wings in scoring, assists, and minutes per game, clocking 32.2 minutes on average. She is second in rebounds with 4.1 per game and third in steals with 0.8 per game.
For the Wings to maintain their playoff position, Bueckers must elevate her game further. With Azzi Fudd sidelined due to a knee injury, Bueckers plays a crucial role. She is supported by teammates Arike Ogunbowale and Jessica Shepard, who score 15.2 and 14.4 points per game, respectively. While a deep playoff run might not be in the cards this year, the Wings have undeniably progressed in their rebuild.
