Padded Bra Controversy in Cycling: Aerodynamic Advantage?

Accusations are surfacing in the cycling world about padded bras being used as an aerodynamic advantage during the Tour de France Femmes in Switzerland and France. This controversy is gaining momentum as the third stage witnessed the longest solo breakaway victory in race history, though padded bras were not involved in this win. Sports are no strangers to scandals, reminiscent of Olympic ski jump rumors regarding injections.

Bert Blocken, an aerodynamics professor at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland and LUT in Finland, explained that a rounder chest can reduce aerodynamic drag through something known as chest fairing. This technique minimizes air resistance, benefiting the cyclist’s performance.

“A Chest Fairing alters the airflow around the body, reducing overpressure on the thighs, thereby lessening air resistance,” Professor Blocken stated.

The use of padded bras is prohibited by the International Cycling Union (UCI), which bars objects on the chest or clothing that changes a rider’s body shape. Anna van der Breggen, Amber Kraak, Carlotta Cipressi, Magdeleine Vallieres Mill, and Margarita Garcia lead the peloton during Stage 3 of the Tour de France Femmes 2026. The Dutch outlet also noted research demonstrating a reduction in air resistance up to 3.6% due to chest fairings.

The controversy has stirred discussions on both sides; some seek advantages, while others aim to identify potential gains through investigations. The cycling teams are urging UCI action, proposing measures like having padded bra inspectors or female jurors conducting checks immediately after time trials.

Evita Muzic and Demi Vollering competed during Stage 3 of the Tour de France Femmes 2026. As teams push for methods to tackle fake cup sizes, they ponder other potential aerodynamic enhancements, such as the well-contoured Brazilian Butt Lift.
