His sentencing follows a lengthy prosecution filled with disturbing allegations and comes amid increased attention on campus sexual violence.
The Santa Barbara County District Attorney, John T. Savrnoch, praised the courage of the victims who came forward. Their testimonies were pivotal, enabling the defendant to be held accountable for his actions. During the trial, Eteghaei attempted a daring escape from courthouse custody but was later captured. The university had to issue multiple Timely Warnings to address such threats. In May, an 18-year-old freshman reported being raped and strangled after meeting a man at a fraternity party. The attack led to public appeals for witnesses and heightened concerns about student safety at the top-ranked party school. The survivor’s family urged the university’s chancellor to involve the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, highlighting the attacker as a continuing community threat.
UC Santa Barbara police have emphasized their dedication to investigating crimes fully, despite federal laws limiting disclosures.
