Oslo Welcomes Soccer Team After World Cup Exit

Oslo streets filled with over 100,000 fans on Monday as Norwegians welcomed their soccer team back home. Despite a 2-1 extra-time defeat by England in the quarter-finals, supporters celebrated their team’s historic World Cup journey.

The Royal Palace grounds were packed under the summer sun early in the afternoon. Unofficial estimates placed the turnout at more than 100,000. Fans greeted the team upon their arrival in Oslo, marked by a traditional water cannon salute.

The parade began at Oslo’s Slottsplassen, with fans extending down Karl Johans gate. The squad first visited King Harald before emerging to greet the enthusiastic crowd.

“I have felt very proud, it has been amazing, both at home and in Spain. The atmosphere among Norwegians has been unbelievable,” said fan Catherine Breiland.

The Royal Guard stood behind the team as they addressed their supporters. Notably absent from the final stage was striker Erling Haaland, who left before the celebrations concluded.

The squad gathered on the palace steps for a final “Viking row,” led by Crown Prince Haakon, amidst the cheers of tens of thousands. Coach Stale Solbakken explained Haaland and Sander Berge’s early departure due to travel delays from the U.S.

The subsequent open-top bus parade was slowed by crowds, causing temporary halts and a reverse maneuver. The team enjoyed beer and waved to fans as celebrations carried on into the evening.

“The run the Norwegian team has had this year is beyond anything I’ve ever expected. I feel everybody in Norway should honor the national team for their amazing work,” said Nicolai Sivesind.

A humorous incident unfolded when low overhead cables forced the standing players to sit to avoid obstructions during the parade. Earlier, Solbakken mentioned a controversial moment where a camera cable might have impacted play during their match. FIFA denied any interference.

The celebrations concluded at City Hall Square, where fans continued to wait patiently. Captain Martin Odegaard shared his surprise with Norwegian broadcaster NRK, remarking on the overwhelming support received both in the USA and Norway.
