Oregon High School Football Coach Let Go After Controversial Game

3 hours ago 0

An Oregon high school football coach lost his job after a controversial match that ended with a 63-0 score. Zach Loboy, who was the head coach at Marist Catholic High School, faced dismissal after his team’s overwhelming victory against rival Cottage Grove last Friday.

The school revealed the decision through an email, stating they decided to change leadership to align with their mission and values. These values likely opposed Loboy’s decision to perform an onside kick while leading 57-0 in the first half. Many found this action reminiscent of Sean Payton’s onside kick in the 2009 Super Bowl, but few expected it under these circumstances.

The game concluded by halftime and did not resume. Cottage Grove Athletic Director Garrett Bridgens confirmed the decision aimed to serve the best interests of students, fans, and everyone involved. The disparity in talent between Marist Catholic and Cottage Grove is evident. The rivals operate on different competitive levels right now. Cottage Grove finished with a 1-8 record last season, scoring 0 points across their last three matches.

According to observers, one team’s sideline was full of backups, while the other had few players to support. This highlighted the disparity between the programs. Marist’s recent games drew attention, including their win against No. 1 Henley in the OSAA Class 4A state title game. Amid this context, Marist prioritized supporting players and maintaining a positive atmosphere for the remainder of the season, recognizing the challenge of mid-season coaching changes.
