Despite his defensive reputation, Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding recently faced scrutiny after his team allowed 52 points against Florida three weeks ago. Such questions are natural in these circumstances. Yet, the team’s performance against Missouri showed significant improvement.
Ole Miss delivered a decisive 31-3 victory over the 13th-ranked Missouri Tigers. This game highlighted a turnaround from past struggles. Missouri, known for its strong offense, including a top-tier rushing game and standout quarterback Austin Simmons, failed to meet expectations under the intense pressure from the Rebel defense.
Credit is due to Golding and the Rebel defense for holding Missouri to a meager 39 rushing yards. They effectively disrupted Simmons throughout the match. Though Simmons threw for 340 yards, he needed nearly 50 attempts to reach that mark.
Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss led the Ole Miss offense. He threw three touchdown passes and added another rushing score. The rushing attack, especially by Kewan Lacy and Makhi Frazier, was crucial, amassing 257 rushing yards against Missouri’s defense.
Makhi Frazier contributed significantly during the first half, effectively moving the team down the field.
Before their defeat, Missouri was a strong contender for a College Football Playoff spot. This loss complicates that possibility. Conversely, Ole Miss has regained momentum with their objectives clearly in sight.
Looking ahead, Ole Miss faces a challenging schedule beginning with a road game against Texas. However, the path involves facing Georgia, Oklahoma, and Mississippi State, posing a difficult stretch toward an SEC Championship.
In contrast, Missouri will aim to recover by traveling to Fayetteville for a matchup against Arkansas. This could be an opportunity for the Tigers to rebound as they reassess their season.
