Stormwater Detention Basin Progress

Oak Lawn officials celebrated advancements in the construction of a stormwater detention basin near Polaris Intermediate School. The Village Board authorized an additional $45,000 for the Polaris flood control project, intended for a specialized soil mixture suitable for athletic fields. District 218 officials expressed concerns regarding player safety if a limestone additive replaced the infield soil mix.

The project has reached a total cost of $15 million, with completion expected by the end of November. The athletic fields are scheduled to reopen by June 2027. Funding is shared between the village and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.

After recent storms, Trustee Ralph Soch confirmed the basin worked effectively. “It was its first test,” he said, noting the basin filled to half capacity and drained within seven hours. When full, drainage will require up to two days.

Nicor Gas Project Communication Issues

Village officials have raised concerns about Nicor Gas’s communication regarding a gas main replacement project south of West 87th Street and north of West 92nd Street. Trustee Alex Olejniczak noted complaints from residents about inadequate notification from Nicor.

Patricia Eaves-Heard of Nicor stated notices were mailed to residents, but acknowledged receipt of only six emails related to the project. Mayor Terry Vorderer emphasized the need for improved collaboration with village staff and residents, noting permit issuance as a form of authority.

Home Buying Project Update

The first home built under a partnership contract with Leeside Builders is nearing completion. The Village Board approved a $480,000 agreement with Leeside Builders to finalize construction of a single-family home at 9347 S. 55th Ave.

Neighbors questioned the transparency surrounding the project. Village Manager Thomas Phelan stated financing systems were implemented post-contract approval in April. A website detailing the program is in development, pending the first home sale.

The contract specifies Leeside Builders may receive up to 40% of profits from home sales, with the village retaining 60%. Buyers will enjoy property tax breaks for 10 years, though exact discounts remain unspecified. Suzanne Hodorowicz voiced concern over tax incentives for purchasers of higher-value homes, expressing a preference for aiding mid- to low-income buyers.
