New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani demanded that President Donald Trump terminate all ICE enforcement in the state following a federal agent’s shooting of an undocumented immigrant in the Bronx. This incident led to public protests and clashes with law enforcement.
During a late-night news conference, Mamdani denounced the shooting, revealing he had a two-hour conversation with Trump. The mayor’s efforts to have the shot individual released were unsuccessful. He stressed that New York City wants ICE operatives out, stating, “All they do is terrorize this city.”
ICE Operation and Reactions
The controversy stems from an ICE officer shooting a man during a targeted arrest mission in the Bronx. Mayor Mamdani accused ICE of operating “with impunity” and spreading “chaos and terror,” alleging it has harmed more people than it has protected. He described ICE as “rotten to its core.”
Governor Kathy Hochul also communicated with Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. She voiced her outrage over the event and urged a suspension of ICE operations in New York, calling for public release of body camera footage to ascertain facts.
“Tonight, I spoke with President Trump and DHS Secretary Mullin about the shooting in Marble Hill,” Hochul noted. “I expressed outrage on behalf of New Yorkers and urged them to halt ICE enforcement operations in New York.”
Incident Details
ICE was attempting to detain a man from the Dominican Republic at approximately 4 p.m. when an agent fired a weapon, injuring him. DHS reported that the individual survived and was hospitalized as the event is under investigation by DHS, FBI, and HSI.
The suspect, previously convicted for grand larceny and arrested for other offenses like assault and robbery, was linked to the Trinitarios gang. Late Thursday, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch detailed that the wounded man was 28 years old, accompanied by a 5-year-old boy in the vehicle during the shooting. The child, unharmed, is now with a family member.
Community and Police Tensions
The injured man, arrested by NYPD in December 2023 but released shortly after, caused protesters to gather outside NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, chanting demands for ICE’s removal from city streets. Demonstrations led to clashes between officers and protesters, resulting in arrests. Some tensions escalated as water bottles were hurled at law enforcement.
The demonstration included slogans like “From Palestine to Mexico, all these walls have got to go,” reflecting broader calls for justice and against barriers.
