NFL Players Returning to College: Alabama’s Potential Re-Additions

As NFL players consider returning to college football, programs are facing new, complex decisions. The Alabama Crimson Tide is among these programs, and head coach Kalen DeBoer discussed the possibility of a former player rejoining the team. He confirmed that discussions with athletic director Greg Byrne are ongoing but a return is not imminent.

DeBoer explained, “Overall, in general, kind of how that works, [athletic director] Greg Byrne communicated with me and us about just what you can and can’t do. There is a possibility out there of someone who was on our roster in the past. Again, right now, he wouldn’t be able to come in and play.” DeBoer addressed this during a media session covered by FOX54 News Huntsville.

This context ties into the ongoing court case impacting the recruiting class of 2022. A recent court ruling granted these players another year of NCAA eligibility before a stay was placed. Some players, such as Thomas Castellanos formerly of Florida State, have already leveraged unique rulings to transfer to new schools.

DeBoer did not specify any players from the 2022 class, recruited by ex-coach Nick Saban, who might be eligible to return. He pivoted to discuss kickers and punters when queried further. However, many players from this class never fully realized their potential. While it’s unlikely players like Jihaad Campbell, Ty Simpson, or Tyler Booker, who are happy with their NFL teams, will return, other possibilities exist.

Wide receiver Kobe Prentice, recently cut by the New England Patriots, could potentially return to the Crimson Tide. Similarly, running back Jam Miller, striving for a roster spot, might consider rejoining to aid Alabama’s injury-stricken backfield.

The situation remains unsettled, requiring ongoing adaptation. DeBoer mentioned, “Just got to see how things move forward and progress. You just never know each day in the world we’re in right now, what tomorrow might look like. We’ll kind of see as we go, but I know there’s a lot of conference and national [officials] figuring this thing out, and Greg Byrne continues to keep me updated on everything.”

This evolving scenario may eventually lead to familiar players returning to Alabama, donning the iconic crimson and white once more.
