New York City Mayor Faces Questions on Socialists Leader’s Actions

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not distance himself from Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in NYC, amid allegations about Gordillo’s financial dealings. Gordillo is accused of failing to pay significant rent on a Crown Heights apartment, while his family reportedly spent $1.4 million renovating their NYC townhouse. Critics highlight this as being in stark contrast to the anti-landlord, rent-abolition agenda that Gordillo supports.

Mamdani stated that those aiming for a “more affordable life” for New Yorkers should be part of the effort. When pressed further on whether Gordillo should resign, or whether he condemned the allegations of employment deceit, Mamdani emphasized the need for inclusivity in making New York accessible to all.

Gordillo, an Ivy League alumnus, participated actively with Mamdani’s campaign team while serving as NYC-DSA co-chair. He also worked on Mamdani’s Economic Development & Workforce Development transition committee. Gordillo faces a pending court case where a landlord alleges a $5,000 rent default on a Crown Heights apartment. This is amid reports of his family’s lengthy townhouse renovations costing $1.4 million.

Rev. Kevin McCall, a Brooklyn pastor, criticized the DSA for double standards, pressing for transparency while allegedly turning a blind eye to Gordillo’s actions. He urged DSA leaders to address the allegations publicly and demand Gordillo’s resignation.

Amidst these controversies, Mamdani’s office, the NYC-DSA, and Gordillo avoided commenting, with the housing issue still unresolved in court. Gordillo’s working-class image was scrutinized further due to his terminated electrician apprenticeship, as reported by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

The New York Post disclosed that Gordillo secured a $95,000 annual salary from NYC-DSA after his apprenticeship termination, which he reportedly did not disclose. Gordillo faced further criticism over the usage of nonunion contractors for his family’s home renovation, despite portraying himself as a union advocate.
