New York City Confronts Gun Violence After Fatal Shooting of 12-Year-Old

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized the need to reject the normalization of violence following the tragic shooting of a 12-year-old boy in the Bronx. The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported the boy was shot near Elliot Place in Mount Eden. Witnesses mentioned hearing five shots and observed a boy on a bike collapse while the shooter fled in a Jeep. The boy, shot in the shoulder, was declared dead at Lincoln Hospital.

In the same incident, a 34-year-old man sustained a foot injury and a 25-year-old was wounded in the backside. Both are expected to survive. Police secured the area around Wanda Deli at Elliot Place and Walton Avenue for investigation.

A family friend, Jose Sanchez, expressed sorrow, saying, “They’re great kids, just minding their business.” Mayor Mamdani took to social media, offering condolences and appreciating efforts by the hospital staff and NYPD to bring those responsible to justice. Emphasizing that children should feel safe, Mamdani insisted, “We cannot accept this violence as normal.”

Mamdani’s term began on January 1. Addressing gun crime has been a notable focus. Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch reported 322 shooting incidents and 381 victims from January to July, a slight decrease from the previous year.

Gun violence has recurrently plagued New York. In April, a gang-related shooting claimed a young girl’s life in Brooklyn. In response, Mamdani called attention to the continuing impact of gun violence on families. He vowed accountability for perpetrators.

Mayor Mamdani’s concerns about gun violence have been expressed even before taking office. In December 2025, he condemned a deadly shooting at Brown University. As a mayoral candidate, he criticized rampant gun violence in Brooklyn.

On a positive note, Mamdani highlighted that the first half of 2026 marked the safest start to any year for New York City. He attributed improvements to a comprehensive government approach, noting, “Our whole-of-government approach to public safety is working.”
