NBA Player Brandon Clarke’s Tragic Overdose

Brandon Clarke, a former NBA player with the Memphis Grizzlies, passed away from an accidental drug overdose, authorities confirmed on Friday. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner stated that the cause was “the effects of heroin and cocaine.” Clarke was found deceased on May 11 in his Los Angeles residence. He was 29 years old.

“The investigation found drug paraphernalia at his home,” authorities reported.

Drafted in 2019 by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Clarke’s rights were traded to the Grizzlies for the rights to Darius Bazley and a future draft pick. The Vancouver native quickly made his presence felt in the team. He was named MVP at the 2019 NBA Summer League, becoming the second non-American to win the award. Over seven years with the Grizzlies, he played mostly as a bench contributor.

This past season was challenging for Clarke. He appeared in only two games due to a knee surgery followed by a right calf strain. The Memphis Grizzlies announced in March that Clarke needed more rehabilitation time and was expected to return the following season.

In April, Clarke faced legal issues after being arrested in Arkansas. Charges included improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing, speeding and trafficking. His court date was set for May 15.

During his college career at Gonzaga, Clarke was a standout performer. He was named to the 2019-20 NBA All-Rookie team, averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Over his career, Clarke logged 20.8 minutes per game across 309 contests, with averages of 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.
