Reflections on Special Moments
Standing on Eternity Beach in St. Lucia, I felt the warmth of the sand and the embrace of my father beside me. The sound of waves welcomed me as I awaited the music that would mark our entrance. Walking down the aisle with my father, I saw Malachi waiting at the altar. It was a moment when every dream seemed to fall into place.
Our wedding day, June 5, 2026, was a day of joy. Despite this happiness, there was an unsettling feeling I couldn’t shake. Electric sensations in my left breast were a constant reminder.
After the ceremony, we danced under the moonlight, merging two families into one. My father and I shared a dance to Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” bringing memories of my mother. Her presence was there, even on the anniversary of her passing.
Life felt promising, but it would soon take an unexpected turn.
Discovering the Unexpected Mass
In March, while trying on a bra, I discovered a solid mass in my left breast. It felt like a small, hard rubber ball. Though the movement and shape didn’t align with typical cancer signs described online, I feared the worst.
On March 27, my primary care physician evaluated the lump at my request, but felt it was harmless. Seeking certainty, I insisted on an ultrasound at the hospital.
Early detection was crucial, having seen my mother’s late diagnosis. Yet, weeks passed before results showed the mass posed low risk. I was advised to monitor changes over six months while waiting for referral to a surgical center.
Despite my protests and symptoms including growing pain, progress was slow. Persistence led me to a breast imaging center for a much-needed biopsy.
Our wedding provided temporary relief, but the biopsy soon followed. It confirmed the mass had rapidly expanded to twice its original size within three months.
Facing a Difficult Diagnosis
In June, mere weeks after our joyous wedding, I received grave news. Diagnosed with triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma, I faced one of the most aggressive breast cancer types.
The diagnosis was overwhelming. Memories of my mother’s battle were vivid. At 25, with life beginning anew, I faced a daunting reality.
Treatment began with an aggressive chemotherapy regimen, aptly named the “Red Devil.” The side effects were severe, but essential for survival.
Four rounds of chemotherapy completed, a double mastectomy awaited in January, followed by months of immunotherapy.
Learning from the Journey
This experience reshaped my perspective on life. Malachi has been unwavering in his support, embodying his vows for better or worse.
Self-advocacy is critical; understanding your body and pursuing health concerns is imperative. Through adversity, the value of life becomes clear.
Every day carries new possibilities, and while uncertainty remains, gratitude grows. Embracing life’s offerings sustains hope for the future I look forward to witnessing.
