Navigating Hard Choices: Insights from Ruth Chang

4 weeks ago 0

Facing significant decisions often feels daunting. These choices might involve taking a new job, ending a relationship, relocating near family, or starting a new career. How do you ensure you make the right decision?

According to Ruth Chang, a professor of jurisprudence at the University of Oxford, it’s crucial to differentiate between big choices and hard choices. Chang, who researches decision-making, explains that some major decisions are straightforward, such as opting for an operation to cure a debilitating illness. These decisions, despite their impact, are easy to make.

A decision becomes challenging when the options are closely matched. ‘One choice might excel in certain ways, while the other excels in different aspects, and neither is clearly superior overall,’ explains Chang. This is when difficult decision-making sets in. Although Chang cannot choose for you, she offers strategies for navigating these choices.

How to Identify a Truly Difficult Choice: The “Small Improvement Test”

Picture having two careers: one on the West Coast and the other on the East Coast. Each job has advantages, yet neither seems decisively better. Suppose the salary for the West Coast position increases by a thousand dollars annually. While an improvement, it doesn’t decisively make it better than the East Coast role. Chang refers to this as the small improvement test. If a minor enhancement doesn’t make one choice clearly superior, you’re dealing with a tough decision.

The Importance of Commitment

Embracing commitment opens you up to new possibilities. When you commit to a path, you invest fully in it. By doing so, you redefine yourself as someone who has chosen — whether it’s a relationship, a career move, or a lifestyle change. This commitment gives your decision value and significance.

Why Hard Choices Matter

Hard choices represent pivotal moments where you define yourself as one person over another. It’s about your decision to create personal value, rather than searching for a fact that determines the best path. For example, in love relationships, no single person is perfect. Commitment makes someone right for you.

Opting for a Cautious Path

Society often admires those who take risks. Yet most people prefer the status quo due to fear of negative outcomes, grounded in evolutionary instincts. Despite this, the ability to commit allows you to create life value beyond passively experiencing it.

Decisions in the Context of a Pandemic

The pandemic has curtailed many activities, prompting reflection on life direction. This period offers a chance to slow down, reassess, and contemplate your commitments. The decisions you make will influence how you handle future hard choices.
