The Midsummer Classic, intended as a celebration of baseball, took a worrying turn for the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. Their star player, Junior Caminero, departed the field in pain.
During the third inning of the MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Caminero was struck on the left hand by a 98 mph fastball thrown by Riley O’Brien, the St. Louis Cardinals closer.
As Caminero exited the field, he hurried to the American League dugout, clearly in distress. He clutched his injured hand and required assistance from trainers. Pinch-runner Miguel Vargas took Caminero’s place on the bases.
Fortunately, X-rays revealed no fractures in Caminero’s hand, bringing some relief to Tampa Bay. Despite the scare, this incident highlighted the ever-present risk in exhibition games. Joe Davis, Fox’s play-by-play announcer, remarked, “Everybody’s worst nightmare in an exhibition is that anything like this happens.”
Caminero’s performance leading up to the game had been impressive. He hit 28 home runs, ranking him fourth in the majors and contributing significantly to the Rays’ position at the top of the AL East.
The event reminded everyone how unforeseen incidents can quickly turn a festive occasion into a near-disaster.
