Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the Michigan Senate, faces accusations of ‘champagne socialism’ due to his substantial household income. His earnings in 2025, as reported, place him and his wife in the top 1% of households within Michigan. The released tax returns indicate an income of $686,069 for that year.
The state’s top 1% income threshold stands at slightly over $611,500, according to IRS data analyzed by Axios. El-Sayed, who often criticizes wealth disparities, has expressed concerns over the wealthy accumulating money that generates more wealth. At a campaign event in August 2025, he stated, “For people who have accumulated so much wealth that your money makes money, at some point, we’re like, ‘well, we can’t possibly tax them.’” He advocates for a wealth tax to redirect funds for public use.
Despite his criticism of wealth concentration, El-Sayed’s tax returns list $262,299 in capital gains. He owns two rental properties valued at $750,000 combined, while critiquing ‘greedy landlords.’ However, he reserves most of his critiques for billionaires, noting, “I don’t begrudge anyone their millions, but I do begrudge everyone their billions.”
His campaign has denied intentions to defund the police, though an unearthed clip shows him questioning the necessity of police firearms.
Notably, El-Sayed receives support from figures such as Bernie Sanders, who has opposed the influence of the top 1% in politics. Sanders, along with other progressive leaders, supports taxing extreme wealth to curb its impact on democracy and the economy.
A part of El-Sayed’s income stems from his wife’s psychiatry practice, criticized for reportedly not accepting insurance. His 2025 reported income leaps from the $237,000 gross income disclosed in his 2018 gubernatorial run. Despite his rhetoric, El-Sayed’s personal expenditures include high-priced wristwatches worth between $2,000 and $10,000.
