Erik and Lyle Menendez, convicted for the 1989 killings of their parents, have secured an earlier parole hearing date. Originally slated for 2028, the hearing will now occur in March 2027 as confirmed by Fox News.
The change in their hearing date is attributed to provisions in Proposition 9. This allows adjustment of parole dates if there’s a change in circumstances or new indicative information, according to The Orange County Register.
“For almost 40 years, Erik and Lyle have worked to take responsibility for their actions, confront and heal from the unimaginable abuse and trauma they endured, grow as individuals, and dedicate themselves to serving others,”a family statement reads.
The brothers have been active in prison initiatives, such as establishing a hospice program and creating Green Space. Their efforts aim to remind fellow inmates of the potential for growth and accountability even while serving life sentences.
The Menendez brothers were originally sentenced to life without parole, a case that captivated media attention. Following a Netflix series, increased support led to their resentencing, allowing for parole eligibility in May 2025. Nonetheless, they were denied parole last year.
Erik and Lyle have claimed that they acted following years of sexual abuse by their father, accounts disputed by prosecutors who allege motives of greed. The family noted gratitude for the brothers’ resentencing and pride in their progress.
Currently, Lyle, 58, and Erik, 55, are held at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
