McCaffrey’s Practice Absence Sparks Concerns Among 49ers Fans

Christian McCaffrey, the renowned running back for the San Francisco 49ers, has once again become the center of attention for fans following his brief absence from practice. Given his previous injury setbacks, any sign of potential issues causes alarm within the Bay Area fan base.

In 2024, McCaffrey was sidelined for 13 games due to various injuries, leading to a disappointing 6-11 season for the 49ers. Despite past challenges, McCaffrey played in all games last year, amassing an impressive 2,126 yards from scrimmage. His performance contributed significantly to the team’s 12-5 record and their near victory in the NFC West.

Understanding McCaffrey’s importance to the team’s achievements, the 49ers have implemented careful strategies to manage his workload. It’s under this framework that McCaffrey’s recent practice absence occurred. This planned break was part of a strategy to keep him fresh for the season’s duration.

“Yeah, obviously, when you don’t practice, the way the media works now it’s a firestorm,” McCaffrey told reporters on Sunday. “But this was part of the plan from the jump, to ramp up pretty big, get nine or ten practices in, kind of come back down and then ramp back up so we’re fresh for the duration. I feel great. I feel fresh, and it’s good to be back out there.”

The team’s running back depth has attracted interest during the offseason due to McCaffrey’s history of injuries. Reports suggest strong optimism for rookie Kaelon Black, drafted in the third round. Black, who tallied 1,040 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns with Indiana last season, might begin the season as McCaffrey’s main backup.

Jordan James, another key player, recently returned to practice following recovery from a rib injury. Meanwhile, Isaac Guerendo is still on the mend from a torn pectoral muscle and unlikely to play for a few more weeks.

The need to address possible injury issues led the 49ers to sign veteran running backs Khalil Herbert and Zamir White. Despite their presence in training camp, both players are expected to provide depth rather than making the regular team roster.
