Max Schueneman’s Journey: A Key Player in Neuqua Valley’s Offense

Max Schueneman, an offensive lineman at Neuqua Valley, faced a challenging start in varsity football during his sophomore year at Oswego. He recalls his first play vividly: “I actually fell straight on my face.” Despite this initial setback, Schueneman quickly rebounded, executing a successful play shortly afterward. He has since evolved into an essential player for the Wildcats, exhibiting versatility and growth as he moves into his senior season.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 305 pounds, Schueneman has become a prominent lineman for Neuqua Valley, which currently holds a 3-6 record. He began his journey as a sophomore starting at right guard. By his junior year, he had secured all-conference recognition in the Southwest Valley Blue, excelling at left tackle with an effective block rate of 87%.

Heading into his senior season, Schueneman expects to return to right guard. However, Coach Bill Ellinghaus plans to utilize Schueneman’s versatility, possibly moving him as the team returns to the DuPage Valley Conference. “I think he will play guard,” Ellinghaus stated, emphasizing Schueneman’s ability to play anywhere on the line.

Neuqua Valley’s quarterback, Drake Mennecke, has great confidence in Schueneman, expressing relief knowing Schueneman will protect him on the field. “It’s awesome to play with Max,” Mennecke shared. “I know that Max is going to get his guy no matter what.” Mennecke believes Schueneman will have a standout year.

Schueneman attributes his progress to working with OL Mafia and dedicating himself to consistent gym sessions. He has focused on improving his running, blocking technique, and quickness. “I like to think for my size I’m pretty fast,” he said, adding he’s playing more guard this year, allowing more involvement in pulling plays.

Schueneman has also enhanced his speed, alongside retaining his strength. “He lost about 10 pounds,” Ellinghaus noted, acknowledging Schueneman as more athletic yet stronger than ever.

His commitment to Lindenwood marks him as Neuqua Valley’s fourth offensive lineman to join a Division I program under Ellinghaus’ tenure. Schueneman’s uncle Karl was a Division I player at Iowa State, creating a family legacy.

“I’m thrilled about his Division I scholarship,” Ellinghaus remarked, noting the increased value of such scholarships due to changes in recruitment dynamics.

With his recruiting process complete, Schueneman is eager for the season ahead. “It’s exciting,” he said. “It feels like this high school career has flown by.” With the Wildcats’ desire for a bounce-back from two losing seasons, Schueneman is pivotal in leading change.

Displaying leadership qualities, Schueneman was recently elected captain by his peers. “He’s developed into more of a leader,” Ellinghaus pointed out, praising Schueneman’s role and influence on the team.
