In Massachusetts’ 5th Congressional District, incumbent House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark emerged victorious from a primary battle against two progressive challengers. Clark’s win on Tuesday over Jonathan Paz and Tarik Samman maintains her position in this securely Democratic territory.
Initially elected in 2013 during a special election, Clark holds the role of House Democratic Whip, a position she’s occupied since 2022. As the second-highest-ranking Democrat after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Clark plays a critical role in opposing Republican initiatives on spending, immigration, and health care. Recently, she has taken a stand against GOP proposals to cut funding for ICE, Head Start, and Medicaid.
The primary featured former city councilor, educator, and union organizer Paz, as well as Samman, a 27-year-old Harvard Law School researcher and union organizer. Clark faced challenges focused on Gaza and involvement of pro-Israel political funds, central issues leveraged by her opponents in this blue Boston-area primary.
According to Federal Election Commission filings, Clark’s fundraising efforts significantly outpaced her challengers, garnering $4.5 million against Paz’s $88,500 and Samman’s $43,800.
A noteworthy part of Clark’s campaign was the endorsement from AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which has previously contributed to her campaign. Despite this support, Clark has been critical of Israel’s war tactics in Gaza, opting to vote against providing $3.3 billion in U.S. military aid last July, citing disagreements with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies.
Clark continues to affirm Israel’s status as a sovereign Jewish state and endorses U.S. aid for specific Israeli defense systems, yet maintains critique against Netanyahu. Despite her acceptance of AIPAC funds, Clark’s challengers Samman and Paz have urged further scrutiny of her stance on Israel.
In 2024, Clark was unopposed, showcasing her electoral strength after beating Republican Caroline Colarusso with a significant margin in 2022.
