The recent mail-in ballot error in Maryland has led to a political showdown. President Donald Trump has urged the Department of Justice to investigate after incorrect ballots were sent out for the upcoming primary elections. Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller countered Trump’s allegations of corruption, stating that election administration mistakes are a common part of the election process. These errors were attributed to a vendor used by the Maryland State Board of Elections.
Trump has blamed Democrat Governor Wes Moore for the snafu, accusing him of corrupting the electoral process to favor Democrats. The Maryland State Board of Elections admitted the error made by Taylor Print & Visual Impressions (TPVI), Inc., the vendor responsible for mail-in ballots.
Trump criticized Governor Moore in a post on social media, claiming, “This was done by the Corrupt Governor of the State, Wes Moore,” and alleging it was to ensure Democrats win.
Miller explained to Fox News Digital that the Maryland State Board of Elections functions independently from the governor’s administration. She noted that ballot distribution errors occur frequently in election administration.
The issue has compelled the state elections board to resend ballots to affected voters, ensuring no duplicate voting occurs due to existing safeguards. Previous instances of election administration errors include a voter-roll software glitch back in 2018.
Despite Trump’s claims, election officials maintain there is no evidence to suggest mail ballot issues happen in every election. The State Administrator of Elections, Jared DeMarinis, refuted Trump’s assertion that illegal ballots were dispersed.
As Trump’s call for an investigation continues, the DOJ has not publicly taken any steps to initiate one. Miller expressed uncertainty over what such an investigation might reveal.
The controversy has led to political tensions, with Republicans pressing for federal oversight of Maryland’s voter rolls.
