Authorities in Virginia are conducting a large-scale search for an armed suspect considered extremely dangerous. This follows an ambush on two deputies during a welfare check on Friday night, which resulted in the death of a military veteran and injury to another officer.
Logan Utt, 31, a deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, was killed in the incident, as confirmed by Sheriff Kevin Kemp. The suspect, Michael Puckett, is wanted for allegedly shooting the deputies, leading to Utt’s death. A $10,000 reward is being offered by the U.S. Marshals Service for information leading to Puckett’s capture. According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Puckett is accused of shooting the deputies during the encounter.
The deputies arrived at Puckett’s location as part of a welfare check requested by a family member. Upon meeting Puckett, he allegedly opened fire, killing Utt and injuring the second deputy. The injured officer was saved by his ballistic vest.
The deputies returned fire, but Puckett managed to escape and is still at large. Virginia State Police are leading the search for him. The sheriff’s office has warned residents to avoid approaching Puckett and to call 911 if he is seen.
Utt had joined the sheriff’s office in 2023, bringing his experience as a military veteran. Sheriff Kemp stated, “Becoming a deputy sheriff was a lifelong dream, and he worked every day to make Carroll County a safer place.” He added that Utt’s death is a profound loss for the community and his family.
The second deputy is recovering and is in stable condition. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has stated her office is closely following the events. She urged anyone with information about Puckett to come forward.
Governor Spanberger remarked, “Deputy Logan Utt’s sacrifice is a testament to his bravery and dedication to his community.”
Utt is survived by his wife and children. The Virginia State Police are spearheading the investigation into the shooting.
